The Perfect Law of Liberty

We begin again with I Corinthians 13:8-10 (ASV) which says, “Love never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall be done away; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall be done away. 9)For we know in part, and we prophesy in part; 10)but when that which is perfect is come, that which is in part shall be done away.”

As each part of God’s word was given, he gave miracles to prove that it was indeed from Him (John 5:36, John 10:25, Luke 9:1-2, Acts 1:5-8). Each time these men spoke or wrote, they revealed, by the direct inspiration of the Holy Spirit, some part of God’s law for us. It should be obvious that a time must come when that law would be fully revealed to us, just as the Old Testament law was fully revealed to the Jews.

James speaks of this. Notice the words that he chooses. “But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” (James 1:25) James refers to God’s revealed word as the Perfect Law of Liberty!

This is that which Paul referred to as “that which is perfect.” It has come! Jude 3 says, “…that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” The phrase “once delivered” tells us that this faith (the perfect law of liberty) was delivered once for all time, never to be repeated! With this perfect, or complete, revelation from God, the need for miracles ceased, and the time of miracles has also ceased. Yes, I said it, but more importantly the Apostle said it—there are no more miracles! Men at that time were given direct revelation from God that they might speak his will. Men now have something so much better—His complete will revealed! It is written in the histories, letters, and prophecies of the New Testament! It is perfect! It is complete! And it is given to us!

No further or different revelation will be given (Jude 3). In fact, Paul said, “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.” (Gal 1:8) It is in this gospel that we must find God’s will for us!

Until next time, let me encourage you to search the scriptures daily, whether these things are so. Acts 17:11

May God bless you in your study of his Word.
